Healing From Liposuction Surgery
Healing From Liposuction Surgery
Following liposuction, always follow your doctor’s advice concerning your recovery. You will probably be instructed to wear a compression garment to accelerate the healing process. This will minimize post-operative swelling and bruising, improve the blood circulation and shorten recovery time.
Compression garments provide comfortable support to areas which have undergone liposuction and, by applying pressure, help the skin fit better to its new contours. Depending on your doctor’s advice, compression garments may need to be worn during both the first stage (initial first two weeks post surgery) and second stage (two to eight weeks post surgery) of recovery. Compression garments are worn like underwear beneath normal clothing.
It is important that a compression garment made specifically for plastic surgery recovery is worn, as choosing the wrong item can have a significant impact on your healing. Over-the-counter products (such as girdles, Lycra shorts, body suits, tights, shape wear and sports bras) are not recommended, because they are not designed for continuous wear during recovery. Wearing the wrong type of garment could be detrimental to the healing process, as it can slow down recovery, worsen swelling and other symptoms and increase post-operative discomfort.
One of the most important ways you can aid recovery following liposuction surgery is to rest and sleep on your back in an inclined position, as this will facilitate optimal blood circulation and help to reduce swelling. Resting and sleeping in an elevated position should be continued for as long as any major swelling remains. You can achieve this by propping yourself up on several pillows or by using a special wedge pillow. Wedge pillows have an incline to provide proper alignment to keep the affected areas elevated to help reduce swelling and enable optimal blood circulation to the healing areas. For patients who have undergone lower body liposuction, there are knee and leg wedges which keep the legs, thighs and calves comfortably elevated. Many patients find bed wedges to be better than pillows when it comes to elevation. The advantages of a wedge compared to a stack of precariously piled pillows are obvious, as you don’t have to worry about a wedge slipping off as you would with pillows and having to constantly rearrange them.
Another factor to be aware of during the initial weeks following liposuction surgery is that hot or steamy water can increase swelling. For this reason, avoid hot showers and make sure the water is only moderately warm. Power showers are best avoided, due to the strong pressure of water streaming directly down on to fragile surgical areas.
As far as general diet is concerned following liposuction surgery, you should keep salt to a minimum, as this worsens swelling. Therefore, as far as possible food or drinks containing salt should be avoided during the recovery period. Drinking plenty of water with fresh lemon will aid in eliminating toxins from your body and help reduce swelling. Eat foods containing vitamin K, such as eggs, yoghurt and lettuce, as vitamin K is said to be beneficial in reducing swelling.
